Tuesday, September 5th, 2017 Day 1

Good morning and welcome to your first day back,

This first block begins with introductions.  I will tell you a bit about myself and give you the tour of the classroom.  We will then hear what you have to say about yourselves.  I will be using the playing cards that you have on your desks to group you into teams of two.  I will then explain the task – you are to dramatize a talk show moment by introducing your guest.  You will need to get together and find out facts about each other.  You should take notes so that you can ask appropriate questions during the performance.  I will give you about 25 to 30 minutes to prepare the script.  You may use props.  The entire presentation should take no more than 2 or so minutes in all.  The final part of this block will be dedicated to your presentations.

The middle block begins with a discussion about the rules and procedures (classroom and school).  We will discuss the logic behind the rules and procedures as well as consequences for breaking rules.  Somewhere in here will be Francais.

The final block of the day begins with the presentation of the classroom website.  I will present the links that you can use as well as how it is structured as some assignments will require that you consult this web site.  Finally, you will begin this last period with a math facts speed test (multiplication table – up to 10 x 10).  You will have a number of minutes to try and solve as may of the problems as you can.  We will then review the answers so that you can see how well you did.  The remainder of this block may be out of doors (depending on weather) for cooperative games (DPA).

TODAY’S LEARNING GOALS:  I CAN…..

  1. present my ideas clearly using appropriate verbal skills (volume, expression,….)
  2. ask open ended questions if I am not sure about what the teacher or peer means to say to me.
  3. pay close attention to all instructions and carefully think about what has been said.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH, 2016 DAY 4

GOOD MORNING STUDENTS AND WELCOME TO TGIF,

After Francais, we will first determine our three S.M.A.R.T. goals by writing them down on the sheet that is found in the package I gave you a few days ago.  You will choose one of these goals to print on a banner for your “Body Parts” art project due Monday. Then we will begin with our Language Arts lesson on Facts and Opinions.  We will check and correct yesterday’s assignment.  We will also view a video on these two major concepts.  I will then begin a discussion on the school dress code – to hear what you think and what you know.  Finally, I will quickly discuss the proper way for constructing a paragraph via handout and web site.

The middle block begins with Mathematics.  We will first check and correct yesterday’s divisibility rules assignment.  I will then begin the lesson on factors and multiples by first asking you what you already know.  I will then use an anchor chart or two to demonstrate the definition and application of both of these concepts.  I will play a Khan Academy video showing you how to solve problems involving factors and multiples.  Your first practice task is due Monday but you will have class time to work on it (if you are on task you should be able to finish it).  What time remains will be given over to you so that you may complete your Visual Arts (Body Parts) project for evaluation – due Monday.

The final block of the day begins with Language Arts Reading. We will review “Main Idea” as this seems to be a problem as shown in the CASI diagnostic test.  We will first discuss what you think you know about this major concept.  I will then refer to the internet to review exemplars of short stories/paragraphs to determine the main idea – and look at topic and concluding sentences.  The final period of this block is out of doors Phys. Ed. (weather permitting).  I will explain the game and we will organize the playing field.  This game relies on your honesty and sense of fair play.

TODAY’S LEARNING GOALS:  I CAN…..

  1. apply the concepts of fact and opinion when expressing my ideas and thoughts about a specific topic during a formal discussion.
  2. define and apply the concepts of factors and multiples when asked to solve whole number problems.
  3. read a text for comprehension using the strategies that assist me in finding meaning to the text.
